IBP – Introduce yourself and your blog
Joy – Hi! My name is Joy Ezeka, Nigerian living in Cape Town, South Africa. I am a Storyteller! I work with small and medium enterprise owners to manage and create stories for their social media platforms, so that they can build their company’s brand, extend their reach and influence their audience in a powerful way. I also have a passion to motivate people to believe in their dreams, create experiences that will lead them a step towards their passion and not give up when they fall. This is my story at the moment! I lost my job at the beginning of the year, applied everywhere “apply-able” but nothing was happening. And then I had my eureka moment! “Why wait for something to happen, why don’t I make it happen?” And I took that one big step in April 1, 2014! I started my own company! Every day I stay on track and push on even when it doesn’t seem like I’m going to make it and I do this because I’m hoping that one day my story will inspire someone to define their own path and write their own script. After taking that big step, I knew that my business will need a platform to call home, that’s when I decided to really take blogging seriously.
IBP – How long have you been blogging?
Joy – I started my recent blog in February 2012 but only took it seriously from April 2014. I really can’t remember why I started this particular blog. I have had several blogs with pseudo names over the years, especially in my 20’s, as a way of dealing with heart breaks! I seemed to be able to write when my heart has been affected but then I kinda forget about the blog after I have gotten over that heartbreak! But this time, when I started theDesignBender, there was no heartbreak! Fast forward to April 2014 when I started my own company, I knew I had to have a platform with which I would use to build my brand. I stumbled on The Daily Post (http://dailypost.wordpress.
com/) on WordPress and they put together a course Blogging 201 on “Branding and Growth” for building your blog and growing your audience, which I registered for. What I learned gave me insights on how and why I should take my blog serious especially as an opportunity for building relationships and creating a hub for my company. Though, I find that I create content more for my clients’ blogs and social media platforms than for my brand. I’m still trying to figure out how to balance all that and still have time to blog. Learning curve, everyday!
IBP – Do you see yourself as a voracious reader?
Joy – YES! I love books! I wish I could get married with shelves of books in the background! When I see books I tremble! With excitement of course! When I was a teenager I would read my Enid Blyton and Nancy Drew books when going to school, coming back, on the dinner table, walking and with a torch light. As I grew older I graduated to inspiration, self-help, biographies, Christian and management books. When I’m depressed I’d go to a bookstore and buy books. When I’m almost broke and don’t know where my next pay will come in I would use the last cash I have to buy a book- I called it investment! I wonder why I didn’t end up a writer! But recently I find that I read a lot online especially since being involved with managing social media. I am hungry for information that the internet has become my classroom and thought leaders in that field, my teachers. Hopeful I’ll get a BA , Masters and who knows, a PHD, from the University of Internet!
IBP – What genre(s) does your blog focus on?
Joy – That’s a tough one! Let me explain why. You see, for the most part of my life, I’ve been involved in quite a number of things, but nothing fitted into one trade or profession and this was so confusing that I thought I was one seriously unfocused human being! But all that changed when I discovered the term “Portfolio Life”! So, I define my portfolio life as an entrepreneur, sculptor, interior designer, a blogger, a motivator, a researcher, a mother who works hard to provide the best life for her amazing son, an awesome sister to 5 other sisters, a happy soon-to-be-wife of a wonderful man, social media and content management consultant. That said my blog will focus on the joys, challenges and triumphs of my portfolio life.
IBP – Has your reading tastes changed since you started your blog?
Joy - Woah! You can say that again! Completely changed! Well, since I started taking blogging seriously and writing content for other blogs. I read content on tips on effective content writing, blogging and social media management. I have my favourite go to experts for these- Social Media Examiner, Post Planner, Ian Cleary, Buffer, Jeff Goins, Michael Hyatt, CoSchedule, Unbounce and anything from Garrett Moon.
IBP – Do you post reviews on your blog?
Joy – Not consciously. I have only reviewed an e-book “Hazardous to Your Social Media Health” that I read by David Spark.
IBP – Do you host guest posts or interviews?
Joy - This is actually something I just decided to include in my blog. I have had my first guest post from a fellow blogger Ms. ME of ECVtalks. I met her on the WordPress Blogging 201 course and no interviews yet but soon.
IBP – How can we stalk you?
