Screen shot 2013-04-26 at 5.36.40 AM

IBP – Introduce yourself and your blog

Kriss – Hello! My name is Kriss Morton and I am the owner, operator, prolific writer, insane rambling blogging crazy reviewer over at Cabin Goddess! I review, write recipes, host authors, tours, have special author spotlights on Fridays and short story spotlights on Sunday’s and all manner of festivities whenever it strikes me! If it is Alaskan I write about it, if I feel like posting images, I post them, if my cat insists on a hostile takeover, she does! Oh and occasionally my partner posts his opinions too. I have been predominately reviewed indie books but I read and review any that strike my fancy. I also am a publicist and host numerous radio shows so you can find those links on the blog too!

IBP – Do you see yourself as a voracious reader?

Kriss – Oh gosh YES! I review at least twice a week and because I host Bewitching Tours radio show at least three times a month I also read those books for show prep so I read at least three a week if not more! I am reading at least six at a time. I read 10% and move to the next one. When I get to the sixth one, I start back on the first till I am done!

IBP – How long have you been blogging?

Kriss – Since Before Livejournal went public. I was working with AOL and a children’s chat room monitor for a now defunct site in Seattle called Freerange media and I maintained a Blog during 1997. I have blogged since then and had various blogs since then. My current blog started off on TwistedSistah.com when I was pregnant with my fifth child in 1999 and I have continued strong since! Cabin Goddess used to be Cabin Bitch and I posted my first book review Fall of 2011 on a Werewolf called DOGWORLD and the next week my first recipe to go along with a book featuring bacon and my bacon persona of THE BACAON WALKER was born. It has never been the same sense.

IBP – What made you decide to start book blogging?

Kriss – I did not decide, it was decided for me! I was taking a break from school and academia because of some health problems. I had just finished reading my 206th book for fun (not any of my school books) and my friend said, “Are you reviewing them at all?” I said I was rating them on Goodreads and doing the challenge but I had no clue how to review. I was scared to death. I was getting my degree in English Literature and felt I was to analytical and many of my first reviews shows this. Even today they are prolific. Some authors appreciate it but readers want to laugh or read a review telling them why they should pay four bucks or even ten to buy a book and read it and they want to understand why they should fork the money over. I tend to talk over folks heads. Now days I let the wild woman out of the bag and have a blast! But no, I did not decide. Coral Russell of The Indie Exchange dragged me kicking and screaming down the rabbit whole and I have not been the same sense, and I could not be happier most days!

IBP – What genre(s) does your blog focus on?

Kriss – Literary fiction, horror, zombie, post apocalypse, psychological horror and this year mystery and crime fiction. I love urban fantasy and paranormal fantasy too. I do not focus on any genre except what I fancy at the time. What I DON’T focus on is straight romance. Though I am reading a bit more of it because of my marketing clients now, I still do not fancy it much. I love horror and love a good dark humor read. OH and if you write snark well throw your book my way!

IBP – Has your reading tastes changed since you started your blog?

Kriss – I think I let things through I never would have read in the first place. I am not as picky as I used to be. I think it is not a good thing honestly. Indie is great but unfortunately it has tended to water down things and so many fabulous authors get lost in the fray. I read till I find the great ones! It is an adventure!

IBP – Do you post reviews on your blog?

Kriss – I post them on my blog FIRST, and then if I want, I post them on Goodreads and Amazon. But I do not post all of them on Amazon.

IBP – How many review requests do you get each month on average?

Kriss – Since closing reviews they have trickled down to 30.

IBP – Do you have a Review Policy or something similar?

Kriss – Yes I do, and it is a mess and I left it like that to deter requests, it has not. I thought about making it easier. I did clean it up and my requests doubled and I decided to go back to the old one and it went down a bit. So I left it that. I hate saying now to people. My crack are tours. I cannot say no to tours.

IBP – Do you review Indie or Small Pub books?

Kriss – Both. But I also get a lot of review requests from three of the six Trade houses too thanks to one of the places I tour from. I am really honored because of it. I am one of the the reviewers to four mid-level presses too.

IBP – Do you host guest posts or interviews?

Kriss – I do special Interviews (http://cabingoddess.com/2013/03/southern-witchcraft-beer-butt-chicken-interview-review-recipes-with-jenharlowbooks/) and a Recipe, it is really cool, and they create recipes that are themed to their books. Both drinks and food! I don’t like Guest posts, but my Fourth-Wall Friday (http://cabingoddess.com/category/guest-posts/fourth-wall-friday/) posts are the closest thing to guest posts which would be considered a guest post and it is more like a author spotlight post.

IBP – What information do you require when an author approaches you?

Kriss – Link to their book, genre, personally addressing me in an email. Honestly they need to go through my review policy page! Even if it is a nightmare! *evil smile* All the info is there!

Book Blogger Friday with Kayla from Kayla’s Place: Mommy & Literary Dreamer

Welcome to Book Blogger Friday! Today we are welcoming Kayla from Kayla’s Place: Mommy & Literary Dreamer to the blog. Friday is the day that we feature a book blogger. Authors are always on the look out for someone to review their book and that’s what book bloggers enjoy doing. This isn’t an invitation to flood Kayla with review requests, but drop by her site, have a look around and say hi!

IBP – Introduce yourself and your blog

Kayla – Well, I’m Kayla & my blog is Kayla’s Place: Mommy & Literary Dreamer. I’m from a small town in Louisiana that I can promise you’ve never heard of but I work in Monroe – if you’re a fan of Duck Dynasty then you’ll recognize Monroe. LoL Yes, it’s true, you can spot them all over town but I promise you we don’t act like the southerners they make us out to be on the show. :) I’ve never raced a lawn mower a day in my life but I have duck hunted several times. ^_^ I’m married, have one 3 year old little man, and 3 other children (a mastiff, a dachshund & a black lab). I created Kayla’s Place (AKA Ramblings of a Toddler’s Mom) because I realized I read entirely too much (if there is such a thing) and realized that sharing what I thought about the novels I read can be really fun. My eyes were completely opened up to the world of book blogging! I adore each and every one of you! I was welcomed with open arms & haven’t looked back since! ^_^

IBP – Do you see yourself as a voracious reader?

Kayla – Definitely. Ha. I’ve grown to accept the fact that reading is my passion (my husband says I have an addiction & the first step is admitting the problem…LoL). I get more excited about books than anything else (well, cough cough, besides the tv show Supernatural – I <3 Dean Winchester). If you ask me a book question, be prepared to sit and listen to me ramble for as long as your ears can stand.

IBP – How long have you been blogging?

Kayla – Well, I blogged a while when I was in college but it wasn’t a book blog – more like a blog about life as a college student. I began book blogging in September 2011. I love spending time working on my blog & networking with other bloggers. I wish I could honestly quit my full time job & blog 24/7. Sadly, I don’t get to spend as much time blogging as I’d like. >_<

IBP – What made you decide to start book blogging?

Kayla – I decided to start book blogging because I realized how my opinion could actually help others decide what to read next. I love to help spread the word about novels. I was already doing this verbally with friends. One day, I got online to read a few reviews on a new book I had heard about. It made me think “huh… why don’t I do this?” Bam… book blogging it is!

IBP – What genre(s) does your blog focus on?

Kayla – My tastes in novels runs far and wide really. My main genres of choice are YA, NA, & Adult contemporary romance, paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and a little erotica here and there. I enjoy a good suspense/mystery novel every now and again as well.

IBP – Has your reading tastes changed since you started your blog?

Kayla – Well, maybe not since I started to blog, but as I grew up, started a family, and real life smacked me in the face, my tastes have changed. I used to read nothing but Stephen King. He was my absolute favorite author. I had every book on my shelf and read several of them over and over again. Now, I haven’t read a SK novel in a few years… sad I know… but I lean more towards the romance genre than ever before. I used to laugh when my grandmother would discuss her latest “smut” novel because I could never picture myself reading “that type of book.” Now, we discuss our latest reads constantly & even pass books back and forth.

IBP – Do you post reviews on your blog?

Kayla – I do! I enjoy posting reviews. I have to kick myself every now and again because I write reviews for novels as part of tours or by request…. but then I read a novel for myself and forget to write a review! >_< Total blonde moment I guess. LoL

IBP – How many review requests do you get each month on average?

Kayla – Hmm… You know, I’ve never actually counted them out. I’m a host for several different blog tour sites and also accept reviews by email. If I had to guess, I probably receive 10-20 requests a month. Sadly I can’t accept every review. I wish I could! There just isn’t enough time in the day! :(

IBP – Do you have a Review Policy or something similar?

Kayla – I do. It’s rather lengthy because I’m one of those people that likes to be completely up front about everything. I adore working with authors & publishers so each time I get a review request, I feel very privileged to have been asked. Authors work hard on their novels so I respect them and want to ensure I put my best foot forward when accepting their novel for review.

IBP – Do you review Indie or Small Pub books?

Kayla – Yes times a million!! My bookshelf wouldn’t be the same without them!! Some of my all time favorites are self-published novels!

IBP – Do you host guest posts or interviews?

Kayla – Yes! I accept guest posts on a case by case basis. I also extend the invitation to do a guest post on my site if I’ve worked with you and feel you have important things to get out there. I love helping authors get the word out about their novels and I enjoy getting to know each one of them better.

IBP – What information do you require when an author approaches you?

Kayla – I want to know about their novel – the synopsis, when it was released or is scheduled to release, a link so I can verify the novel they’re telling me about, and as much about themselves as they want to share. My favorite review requests are those in which the author tells me why they decided to write the novel they’re telling me about. That insight is great & helps me get a feel for what the novel may be like. I don’t require that they tell me all of this in one formal email though. I enjoy talking back and forth with them. I ask questions and if they’re willing to answer & hold a conversation with me, then I know they’re someone I’d love to work with… I love to talk…Digitally anyways. I’m really a quiet person in face to face “real world” situations. ^_^

Book Blogger Friday with Tory Richards

Indie Book Promo is happy to welcome Tory Richards to the blog today. Tory is an author, but she regularly features other authors on her blog! We’re including her in today’s Book Blogger Friday. I hope you enjoy learning about her. Drop by her blog and say hi and check out her books.

Make a new bloggy friend today!

IBP – Introduce yourself and your blog

Tory – Hi, for those of you who don’t know me, my name is Tory Richards. I’m a grandma who likes to read and write smut, otherwise known as erotic romance. I’m also a daughter, sister, aunt, mother, friend and writer. My blog will give you insight about my books, and where you can get them. A little more about who I am, the events I like to participate in, and links to other authors and interesting websites.

IBP – Do you see yourself as a voracious reader?

Tory – I used to be but once I became published writing kind of took over. I do get a chance to read once in a while and you can find some of my reviews on Amazon and Goodreads.

IBP – How long have you been blogging?

Tory – Since about 2006, shortly after my first book came out.

IBP – What made you decide to start book blogging?

Tory – When I found out what a blog was, and that people could leave comments on my posts. I like interacting with readers and always get back to them, usually within 24 hours. And I don’t just blog about my books. You’ll find any number of topics from jokes, heart-felt stories, funny pictures, author guest posts, product warnings, and more. I post (just about every day) different things to keep it fresh and interesting.

IBP – What genre(s) does your blog focus on?

Tory – Almost any kind of romance, mostly erotic. However during blog tours it varies. I also like to participate in blog hops.

IBP – Has your reading tastes changed since you started your blog?

Tory – Oh definitely! When I first started reading I was addicted to Viking and historical romances. Back when Katheleen E. Woodiwiss and Barbara Cartland were popular. Now I enjoy reading werewolf, shifter, and vampire romance.

IBP – Do you post reviews on your blog?

Tory – Yes, reviews I’ve received for my own books. And when I host blog tours for authors they might include reviews in their articles.

IBP -  How many review requests do you get each month on average?

Tory – I’ve only ever received one request for a review and that was recently.

IBP – Do you have a Review Policy or something similar?

Tory – No.

IBP – Do you host guest posts or interviews?

Tory – Yes. I like helping other authors promo their work.

IBP – How can we stalk you?

Tory – My email is tory.richards@yahoo.com
My website/blog is toryrichards.com

Book Blogger Friday with Cherie Reich from Surrounded by Books Reviews

Indie Book Promo is happy to welcome Cherie Reich of Surrounded by Books Review to the blog. It’s Book Blogger Friday and it’s the day that we introduce you to a Book Blogger!  Remember, this is your opportunity to make a bloggy friend, not to pepper Cherie with requests for a review. Drop by her blog, say hi!  See what there is to see :)

Screen shot 2013-03-22 at 6.32.51 AM

IBP – Do you see yourself as a voracious reader?

Cherie – Yes, to some extent. I always wish I had more time to read, but I do try to average a book a week.

IBP – How long have you been blogging?

Cherie – I have been blogging for three and a half years.

IBP – What made you decide to start book blogging?

Cherie – I am a writer too, so I wanted to split my writing-related blog from my reading-related blog, so I created my book blog, Surrounded by Books Reviews.

IBP – What genre(s) does your blog focus on?

Cherie – I don’t deny a book based on the genre per se, but I prefer fantasy, mysteries/thrillers, soft science fiction, and romance from Middle Grade to Adult.

IBP – Has your reading tastes changed since you started your blog?

Cherie – Yes. I have found I’m pickier about what I read. There are too many books and too little time.

IBP – Do you post reviews on your blog?

Cherie – Yes, I do. I also post them on Goodreads and usually Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

IBP – How many review requests do you get each month on average?

Cherie – Right now, Surrounded by Books Reviews is closed to review requests. When I first opened up, I was inundated with requests. I still have books from two years ago waiting for a read and review. But I do hope to clear out my list in the next few months, so I can open to review requests again.

IBP – Do you have a Review Policy or something similar?

Cherie – Yes, I do have a review policy. When I do accept books, I also often want to see a sample/excerpt before I accept a review. This way I can find the best books for me to read and review.

IBP – Do you review Indie or Small Pub books?

Cherie – Yes, I do. I love books and authors. I don’t care how someone chooses to publish.

IBP – Do you host guest posts or interviews?

Cherie – I have in the past. Now I mainly do guest posts and interviews on my author-related blog as opposed to my book blog. I do participate in memes such as Teaser Tuesdays and Waiting on Wednesday on my book blog.

IBP – What information do you require when an author approaches you?

Cherie – When I am open to reviews, I appreciate an author filling out the form on my blog, which includes author name, book title, publisher (if any), genre, book description, book length, and an excerpt.

IBP – How can we stalk you?

Book Blogger Friday with Beverly & Tamara of Smile Someone Loves You

Welcome to Book Blogger Friday! Today we are welcoming Beverly and Tamara from SSLY – Smile Somebody Loves You – to the blog. The purpose of Book Blogger Friday is to introduce book bloggers to authors. This isn’t an invitation to swamp Beverly and Tamara with review requests, but it is an invitation for you all to drop by their blog and say hello!

Screen shot 2013-03-13 at 8.29.49 PM

IBP – Introduce yourself and your blog

SSLY – We are Beverly Ovalle and Tamara Hoffa.  Our blog is SSLY – Smile Somebody Loves You.  It is a blog geared toward romance.  We have set up a reciprocal Facebook page with the same name and a twitter page with the same name.  Even an email!  It gives us a larger audience to promote our blog and vice versa.

IBP – Do you see yourself as a voracious reader?

SSLY – We are both huge readers.  Bev: I currently review for one online review site.  I admit I enjoyed reading more before I started doing reviews but if the book is good enough, why not rave about it, right?  I love reading just about anything fiction.  I am addicted to romance but sometimes I just need a good western (blood & guts, lol!) or sci fi.  YA is a favorite genre of mine as sometimes I get tired of all the sex in novels. Sad I know as I write erotic romance J

Tamara: I read about a book a day. All genres of romance, though I am not a huge fan of historical or YA. I also love a good mystery. I also Beta read for several authors and Edit for Secret Cravings Publishing. I was reviewing for the same site as Bev, but just resigned, because there just aren’t enough hours in the day! lol

IBP – How long have you been blogging?

SSLY – Since February 1, 2013.  Total newbies!

IBP – What made you decide to start book blogging?

SSLY – To promote our own books!  We are both newly contracted authors.  Tamara has one published with great reviews (Heart of a Soldier), and another due to be published in May.  I have one that I am waiting to spring on an unsuspecting public as it is in my editor’s hands right now (Dragons’ Mate-an erotic shifter ménage).  But doing just our own would be boring and since we both love to read (our daughter’s ask if we ever talk about anything else but books, lol!) thought we could help promote what we love with others.

IBP – What genre(s) does your blog focus on?

SSLY – We focus mainly on romance, but have Out of this World Saturdays and Thrill Me Thursdays. We have scheduled a couple of authors and books that are more Sci-Fi and detective that have requested to be on our blog and they fall quite naturally into those days.

IBP – Has your reading tastes changed since you started your blog?

SSLY – Nope. We still have quite eclectic tastes in books; we’ve just been introduced to more fantastic authors.

IBP – Do you post reviews on your blog?

SSLY – We have not as yet.  We have been discussing it, but as the both of us have been doing reviews for so long for another site, we are not sure we want to open that can of worms.  It might be an option on our From Me to You Fridays in the future.  We do share reviews found on other sites on our Facebook page and our reviews from the site we review for.  Authors or anyone that want to share a good review are welcome to share with us.  We are not into bashing authors and our pet peeve is editing and poor spelling, you know then and than, its and it’s.  I’m not sure where my aversion comes from, lol, other than having loved English in school, but Tamara is a beta reader and a professional editor so it drives her batty! I know I have a hard time reviewing a book with errors like that, but it does affect your review.  I had to review one that did some “cutesy” thing with quotation marks. If I hadn’t read that particular author before and loved her stories I would never have read another one after that. If we do, we probably won’t take requests, just books we’ve read and enjoyed.

IBP – How many review requests do you get each month on average?

SSLY – None as we have not given that as an option

IBP -Do you have a Review Policy or something similar?

SSLY – No but reviews can be linked if link is supplied through Facebook or to attach to the book spotlight

IBP – Do you review Indie or Small Pub books?

SSLY – No we will spotlight them though

IBP – Do you host guest posts or interviews?

SSLY – Yes, they are super fun

IBP -What information do you require when an author approaches you?

SSLY – For a book spotlight, the cover and blurb, buy links (or really what’s the point?)  An author bio to go with it.  For an interview, a picture. We’ve had body parts, hand drawings and real photos for this and we send the interview questions for a response.  If we mix up the male and female interviews it has been quite amusing.  And no we didn’t do it on purpose.  Most of our questions were originally geared towards a female author.  We’ve adjusted the interviews due to this, though the ones that the men answered were hilarious and they were totally good with it, great sense of humor each one! We always welcome a book & blurb along with the interview.  And Buy Links (see a theme here?) Pretty much anything to catch a reader’s eye to promote their book.  We also have some character interviews coming up, but for that we really need to have read the book to gear the interview towards the character.  If we get a request for that, if one of us hasn’t read it, we would need a copy to read.  But as much as we read, that might not be an issue.  We also welcome author blogs and that has been pretty much anything goes.  We are participating in a couple of upcoming hops and would like to continue those in the future.  They are a great promotion for our blog and authors.

IBP -How can we stalk you?

SSLY – LOL!  In a big car so we can see you!  Or if you prefer the sneakier approach here are our links.  You can win the stalker award if you find our personal accounts other than these!  Here are our public accounts:

Book Blogger Friday with Allison from Allison’s Book Bag

Welcome to Book Blogger Friday!

This is the day of the week that we take the opportunity to meet a book blogger – Allison from Allison’s Book Bag. Remember, book bloggers are uber book fans – we love promoting books! Take a few minutes and drop by Allison’s blog and say hi! Make some bloggy friends!

Screen shot 2013-02-21 at 7.24.42 PM

IBP – Introduce yourself….

Allison – Originally from Newfoundland, I moved to the Midwest for work and love. As a part-time resource teacher, I teach reading and writing in the elementary grades and host a story-writing club. I have written a monthly online column, a series of pet shelter-themed plays, and two published fantasies. These days, besides posting to my blog, I enjoy interviewing locals for articles and revising a novel I drafted during National Novel Writing Month. My husband faithfully edits my writing, including all my reviews, and even sometimes posts his own contributions to my blog. Our pets once used to listen to my stories, but are no longer able to keep up with my output. However, they still like to hang around when I write and my cat even contributes by sitting on my keyboard.

IBP – Introduce your blog….

AllisonAllison’s Book Bag is dedicated to reviewing books for young people. This includes picture books, chapter books, middle-grade books, and young adult books. It includes mostly fiction and nonfiction. I will review nonfiction, if about an area for which I have some knowledge. Normally, I do not review poetry or essay collections.

IBP – Do you see yourself as a voracious reader?

Allison – I love to read! Once that included children’s anthologies, encyclopedias, and even cereal boxes. Eventually, I settled to reading mostly novels. Since starting my blog, I almost exclusively read books for young people. Both as a child and as an adult, one room in my home has been dedicated to books. Nowadays, there is even an overflow of boxes in the basement. So many books, so little time! My idea of the perfect living location would be next to the library. Heck, I’d love just to live in a book store.

IBP – How long have you been blogging?

Allison – Almost three years. (Whew, I managed to write a short answer!)

IBP – What made you decide to start book blogging?

Allison – One spring break, I carted home several books to read from my school’s library. My husband suggested, “You should start a blog of children’s book reviews. You’re always reading children’s books anyway. You might as well review them.” And so Allison’s Book Bag began!

IBP – What genre(s) does your blog focus on?

Allison – I read any genre. However, I tend to most like realistic, nature, and fantasy. While I enjoy science fiction and paranormal, these are the genres where I have also disliked many offerings.

IBP – Have your reading tastes changed since you started your blog?

Allison – Yes. When I first started, I was selecting books based on two factors. One, if a book appealed to me, I read it. Two, if I thought my students would like a book, I read it. Eventually, as part of trying to broaden my audience for my blog, I started paying attention to popular children’s and young adult books or to those being listed in GoodReads’ groups for those ages. For a while, these three interests meshed. Then all kinds of other influences started to affect my decisions: I’d love if my readers were exposed to the best of writers from my home province of Newfoundland; the majority of my reluctant readers tend to be boys, so I started looking for books that might appeal to them; I heard Grace Lin talk about multicultural books, which led me to conduct a survey to see how multicultural books fared as Golden Sower winners. As you can see, my blog is organic.

IBP – Do you post reviews on your blog?

Allison – Initially, I posted ONLY reviews. After the first year, I added interviews and guest posts. Then as a promotional tool, I started writing daily biographical teasers. Most recently, I have started participating in Memes. However, my focus will always be reviews. After all, that’s why I started Allison’s Book Bag!

IBP – How many review requests do you get each month on average?

Allison – I probably receive about five. Half of those I accept. That said, these statistics are misleading, because the requests come in waves. I might have a month where I don’t receive any requests and then a month where I receive ten.

IBP – Do you have a Review Policy?

Allison - Yes, I do! http://allisonsbookbag.wordpress.com/request-a-review/
It’ll soon be updated to include a schedule for when I’ll post reviews that have been requested. This schedule will allow me to read a balance of books that are my choice and books that others have asked me to read.

IBP – Do you review Indie or Small Pub books?

Allison – I don’t review Indie books, unless I personally know the author. The majority of the books which I have reviewed in the past have been Small Pub books. However, I’m moving towards accepting books from Small Publishers only if the book fits my special interests: books featuring male leads, books representing other cultures or regions, Christian books, etc.

IBP – Do you host guest posts or interviews?

Allison – Absolutely yes! Whenever possible, I combine a review with at least one of these.

IBP – What information do you require when an author approaches you?

Allison – I’m most likely to accept requests when an author provides me with a synopsis of their book, and describes the intended audience and the genre.

IBP – How can we stalk you?

AllisonAllison’s Book Bag: http://allisonsbookbag.wordpress.com/
I also cross-post reviews at Amazon, Book Blogs, GoodReads, Jacketflap, and Networked Blogs.

We’d like to thank Allison for dropping by and sharing about her blog!  Now it is your turn – drop by her blog and say hi!

Book Blogger Friday with Gina from Behind A Million And One Pages

Welcome to Book Blogger Friday! This is the day that we feature a book blogger. The idea behind this is to help you make some bloggy friends. Today’s Book Blogger is Gina and her blog is called Behind A Million And One Pages and looks like:

Screen shot 2013-02-14 at 4.11.31 PM

Gina is here to answer a few of our questions. Make sure you drop by her blog and say hi when you get a chance!

IBP -  Introduce yourself and your blog

Gina – Hi all! My name is Gina, and I run the blog Behind A Million And One Pages. At my blog, you can find a whole heap of different things such as reviews, guest posts, interviews, giveaways, promo posts… the whole nine yards! I also make my own Bookmarks that are available to download and print on the blog for FREE :D

IBP – Do you see yourself as a voracious reader?

Gina – YES! I always have a book in my bag (or my Sony Reader) ready for any spare moment so that I can get even only a couple pages in.  When I’m not doing all my blogging things on my laptop, I’m reading.

IBP – How long have you been blogging?

Gina – Over a year, I started at the end of October 2011 and I haven’t looked back since

IBP – What made you decide to start book blogging?

Gina – Mainly from Goodreads. All of my friends had blogs and it kinda sunk in. So I asked them all about it and how it works and if it would be easy to set up a blog etc etc. And so it all happened
IBP – What genre(s) does your blog focus on?

Gina – Anything within YA. I have done some middle-grade novels, but I prefer YA over anything else.

IBP -  Has your reading tastes changed since you started your blog?

Gina – I’ve always been into YA books, but yes, I think so. I used to be all about YA Paranormal. Now I’m obsessed with YA Dystopian. Most of them are within a series, but the first one is always the best because it brings a new world and you learn about everything that has changed.

IBP -  Do you post reviews on your blog?

Gina – MOST DEFINITELY! All of my reviews are posted on my blog before they are posted onto Goodreads and all other websites where the book is sold (if I can actually get a review on them without having bought them….Amazon :/ )

IBP – How many review requests do you get each month on average?

Gina – Wow. Well, I have stopped keeping track because I have cut down review requests at the moment. My list is piling high and I stopped taking requests because I didn’t want other authors waiting forever for a review of their novel. But before, I probably got around 20 or so per month. I am known for my in-depth reviews, which is probably why I get so many requests… but I’m not complaining, I love it!

IBP – Do you have a Review Policy or something similar?

Gina – Yes I do, it is on my blog (link below). But basically it says that no author has influenced my review of the novel that I review. I accept both ePub (and PDF) and paperback (/hardback) copies of novels to review, however, if the author sends me a paperback copy of their novel for me to review, I will add that to the front of the queue. I do this because I live in Australia, and because the author is taking the time out to send me a print copy of their novel, that they deserve to be bumped up in the line.

http://behindamillionandonepages.blogspot.com.au/p/review-policy.html

IBP – Do you review Indie or Small Pub books?

Gina – I review all kinds of novels, even indie and small pub books. I do not pick out grammatical errors in my reviews (as long as I can actually understand what the book is saying), I go by the story that is presented, as well as the characters, world building etc. This is all found in my review policy (link above)

IBP – Do you host guest posts or interviews?

Gina – All the time, I have two default sets of questions for authors regarding interviews. One is for the first time they are on the blog, and two, is for the second time they come to the blog. With guest posts, I allow the author to choose any topic they wish (also more info in my review policy).

IBP – What information do you require when an author approaches you?

Gina – Book blurb is the obvious and most important piece of information that I can get. If the author would like to include any other promotion to the blog post, such as excerpts, interview, giveaway etc. Also, if there is a certain date that the author would like the review/post published by, with this though, allow for within a few weeks (e.g. want the interview posted sometime within the first and second week of Feb) and I can see what I can do. This as well, allows me to check my blog’s schedule so that maximum coverage can be achieved, as well as without clashing with any other authors, blog tours etc.

IBP – How can we stalk you?

Gina – The most important way is my blog http://behindamillionandonepages.blogspot.com

Book Blogger Friday with Anya From On Starships and Dragonwings

Welcome to Book Blogger Friday! This is a weekly event that helps authors meet book bloggers. Since one of the objectives of this blog is to educate and to help authors achieve their goals of selling more books, we like to take time to introduce some book bloggers on this blog.

Book Bloggers are the uber-fan. They love books and love helping authors promote their books. This week’s book blogger is Anya from the blog, On Starships & Dragonwings.  Please drop by her blog and say hi!

Screen shot 2013-01-31 at 7.12.21 PM
IBP – Introduce yourself and your blog

Anya – Hello, I’m Anya! I’m a sci-fi and fantasy book lover and computer science PhD student (uber nerd, I know!). My blog is On Starships and Dragonwings, and is the place for me to review the sci-fi and fantasy books I read, discuss book-related things and meet new book-loving friends. I aimed to incorporate both the science fiction and fantasy genres in the title ;-) .

IBP – Do you see yourself as a voracious reader?

Anya – Yes and no. Yes in that I definitely read more than the average person, ie every day and as much as I can. It’s what I do instead of watching TV or playing video games. No in that I don’t read nearly as much as I’d like to (every waking minute ;-) ) because of all the homework graduate school throws at me. There is a whole range of reading habits in the book blogging community and I think I fall on the low to middle end of the spectrum :) .

IBP – How long have you been blogging?

Anya – I started briefly in 2010, then took a break without realizing that there was a book blogging community. Once I found my first connection to the community, though, I started back up in March of 2012 and have loved it ever since!

IBP – What made you decide to start book blogging?

Anya – There were a number of reasons. Not a lot of my real life friends read the same kinds of books that I do (or as much as I do) and so I wanted to find other people that had similar book interests. I also had hit that stage where I just wanted to start a blog and figured that reading was the one hobby I had always loved and never quit, so it was the perfect thing to focus on! I never realized how vibrant the book blogging community was when I first started, but I’m so lucky to have found it.

IBP – What genre(s) does your blog focus on?

Anya – Fantasy and sci-fi all the way! This also included related genres like urban fantasy and dystopias, since they fall into the broad definitions of “stuff that isn’t in our world” ;-) . As far as the age range, I used to be all about adult books, but have since discovered the fun of reading YA, so I review both.

IBP – Has your reading tastes changed since you started your blog?

Anya – Yey segue-way! Yes, indeed. I don’t think I even knew what YA was before I started book blogging and reading other blogs’ reviews. The first YA book I tried was Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi and I obviously fell in love with the genre. I am still working on branching out too. I rely on the community for pretty much all my recommendations, especially genres that are a little outside my comfort range. Right now I’m looking for steampunk and mermaid recommendations if anyone has any :D .

IBP – Do you post reviews on your blog?

Anya – Yup! I have a fairly unique structure to my reviews actually. I always lay out the strengths and weaknesses of every book clearly, no matter what the actual star rating. I find that this helps readers understand why I gave the rating I did, since maybe they won’t agree with me on all points. It also helps when you have a bunch of posts you are reading in the morning, since all the information is laid out clearly, at least that’s how I hope it helps ;-) .

IBP – How many review requests do you get each month on average?

Anya – Not that many actually, maybe 3, though it varies widely each month. I read a lot of library books and borrowed books, since there are plenty of older books I want to catch up on in addition to new releases to support.

IBP – Do you have a Review Policy or something similar?

Anya – Yup, it’s on my About page. Basically, I’m accepting books for sci-fi and fantasy, YA and adult, though because of my obligations (graduate school), I can’t guarantee a minimum turn around time. If there is a specific date you want a review by, let me know and I’ll be honest about whether I can make it happen. I can accept physical and Kindle books. The best way to contact me is onstarshipsanddragonwings(at)gmail(dot)com or the contact form on my About page (http://www.onstarshipsanddragonwings.com/about/).

IBP – Do you review Indie or Small Pub books?

Anya – Yes! I love supporting Indie and Small Pub books, in fact some of my favorite books have been Indie/Small Pub. My biggest request to all Indie authors though is to invest in good editing at every level, since that is one thing that often brings down my rating of an Indie book that I could have loved. But yes, I am happy to accept books from Indie and Small Pub authors.

IBP – Do you host guest posts or interviews?

Anya – I don’t do them very often, but I’m happy to host guest posts if anyone is interested. I don’t host interviews often since I have such a hard time thinking of questions I think are good enough ;-) . I am always looking for more content though, so any guest posts would be welcome, just drop me a line!

IBP – What information do you require when an author approaches you?

Anya – Basically, the more information included in the email, the happier I am. One of the most impressive things I’ve seen is when an author clearly shows that they are familiar with my blog by saying why they think their book will specifically interest me because of some previous book I liked. But anyway, the information that is most important is obviously book title, their name, genre, and book description. What is also important but often overlooked is age range (this has been a problem in the past), Goodreads link (I, like many book bloggers, care more about what Goodreads says than Amazon), and what formats are available. Also if there is a date that you need the review by, definitely say that up front, since most of the time we have long lists of books to read before yours.

IBP – How can we stalk you?

Anya – Oh so many ways :D

Interview with Carl Purdon, author of The Night Train

Indie Book Promo is happy to welcome Carl Purdon to the blog. He is the author of The Night Train and is here to talk about writing and share some information about his book. If this sound like a book that you would be interested in reading, please pick up a copy using the buy links at the bottom of the post.

• • •

IBP: Try to describe your book in one sentence.

Carl: To escape his abusive father, Jayrod Nash seeks  refuge aboard a freight train and falls into the hands of a mysterious hobo named Farley.

IBP: Did you always have it in mind to be a writer or did it just happen?

Carl: I remember standing in my front yard somewhere around the age of five, with words in my head, wishing I knew how to write them down. I knew at that moment I would be a writer someday. It took decades before I felt ready to tackle writing a novel. I suppose I needed to experience life before I could write about it.

NightTrainFINALIBP: Do you read reviews written about your book?

Carl: Yes, absolutely. It’s very moving when a reader likes your work enough to write a review. Good reviews can be a great motivator during those times when the words refuse to come.

IBP: Do you listen to music while writing?

Carl: Sometimes, depending on my mood. My musical tastes range from Merle Haggard and Johnny Cash, to Pearl Jam and Nirvana.

IBP: Why did you choose the genre you write in?

Carl: I have to admit I’ve never given much consideration to genre. My stories typically begin with a character, or a situation, and I go from there. Most of my good ideas come to me in my sleep.

IBP: Are you a plotter or a pantzer?

Carl: I am an unapologetic pantzer. The attempts I’ve made at outlining have never made it past the third or fourth chapter because my characters often do things I don’t expect. One thing I do quite often, though, while driving to work, riding my motorcycle, or just lying in bed unable to sleep, is pretend to be my character. I put my character in different situations and see how he or she reacts. It’s a great exercise for getting to know the person you’re bringing to life.

IBP: Where do you get your inspiration?

Carl: I have an overactive imagination. It amazes me that no matter what situation you conjure up, someone, somewhere is probably experiencing it at that very moment. People are being murdered, raped, kidnapped, tortured, deceived,  and cheated on, but they are also falling in and out of love, holding newborns, winning lotteries, and breaking into the Amazon top 10. For as long as I can remember, I’ve spent a lot of time (perhaps too much) imagining what it would be like to be those people. I want to tell their stories. I want to write stories people will read and say, that was me, or I know someone like that.

IBP: Do you have an all-time favorite book?

Carl: No, there are far too many wonderful books to pick a favorite. Every time I try to think of a favorite I end up with a long list. I tend to read a lot of biographies, history, and classic literature. There never seems to be enough time to read these days, what with the day job, working on my second novel, and family functions.

IBP: Do you prefer Twitter or Facebook?

Carl: Twitter. It took me a while to get the hang of communicating 140 characters at a time, but now I spend more time on Twitter than all other social media combined. Someone said recently that Twitter is the great equalizer, and I think there’s a lot of truth to that. If you are interesting, or witty, it doesn’t matter if you’re famous or not. People will respond. It’s also a great way to connect with readers and fellow authors. I make an effort to respond to every message that isn’t spam.

IBP: If I give you a time machine, what time period and in what place would you travel to?

Carl: I live in a rural part of Mississippi. The tiny church just down the road was founded in 1853. I would love to know the history behind the spot where I live now, so I would travel back to 1853 and attend that first church service.

IBP: Are you working on anything new and if so when can we expect to see it?

Carl: Yes, I just finished the first draft of my second novel. I hope to release it sometime in April of 2013.

Blurb:

Abused at home and bullied at school, young Jayrod Nash steals away on a freight train with a vow never to return. His best friend tags along, but his heart’s not in it. They meet up with a hobo named Farley, who offers protection in exchange for obedience, and soon learn he’s running too.

THE NIGHT TRAIN is a novel about the struggle of innocence against brutality, written with powerful characters who allow no commentary from the author. Together they paint a picture of life as it exists too often.

Carl Purdon weaves a tale that takes the reader through the full gamut of emotions, and leaves them feeling as if they have known the Nash family all their lives. Perhaps they have.

Excerpt:

The orange glow of the cigarette brightened and dimmed with a slow steady rhythm for the next couple of minutes then nose-dived to the floor and was gone. Not a sound came from the smoker. Nothing to betray his identity or his intent. Had he been there all along, watching them struggle to board the car, or had he joined them while they slept? Jayrod wondered in silence. Trembled with fear. His hand found Arnold’s on the dusty floor and squeezed it.

An hour passed without movement from the opposite end of the car. Had they imagined it? Could it have been a phantom? Imagination rooted in fear? The train rocked on tirelessly. Trees clicked past them outside the half-open door, little more than shadowy figures against a backdrop of black. The stench inside the car hung over them like a heavy fog that never seemed to lift. Neither boy had moved a muscle since seeing the cigarette.

Fear and fatigue took its toll sometime before dawn and Jayrod felt Arnold’s head bobbing against his shoulder like a rag doll. Like a doting mother he lowered him back onto the floor, careful to keep his head on the duffle bag pillow, then returned his own weary focus back toward the end of the car where the mystery rider lurked. In time he lay back too, and cocked his head sideways so he could see if anything moved where the cigarette had floated in the air. Sleep took him shortly thereafter and he slept so hard even the violent jolts of the car didn’t wake him.

Dawn came and went while they slept. A kick to Jayrod’s left foot roused him. He opened his eyes with a jerk and saw a man standing over him. The stranger was scraggly and looked a few years older than Jayrod’s father. His eyes were grayish green and no bigger than dimes. They had a meanness to them that made Jayrod wonder if he was about to strike them both dead with his empty hands. A bushy dirt-blonde mustache that looked like it hadn’t been trimmed in years hid his top lip. Jayrod elbowed Arnold in the ribs.

“What’s in the bags?”

Stray hairs jutted out in all direction from the tangle below his nose. One strand curled upward and touched the bag just below his right eye. Jayrod had never seen a moustache so unkempt. Stubble covered his chin and cheeks. For a brief moment Jayrod thought they might knock him out of the way if they worked together, but there was no way to communicate it to Arnold, so he let the notion slip away. The truth was he was scared. Terrified.

Book Blogger Friday with Kelly from The Bookscape Report

Indie Book Promo is happy to welcome Kelly from The Bookscape Report to the blog! She is participating in our Book Blogger Friday event. Like on other Fridays, the point of introducing Kelly to you all, it to help you find book bloggers who you can chat about books with. This is not an invitation to flood Kelly with review requests!

So, welcome to Book Blogger Friday and go make some bloggy friends!

IBP – Introduce yourself and your blog.

Kelly – I’m an assistant librarian and an MLIS student. I’m also a writer and am hoping to finish revising my novel within the next six months. Aside from reading, writing, and blogging, I love photography, basketball, gymnastics, tennis, soccer, music, crafting and cupcakes. My blog focuses on young adult literature, but I do post reviews for adult fiction and non-fiction every so often.

IBP – Do you see yourself as a voracious reader?

Kelly – Absolutely. I’ve been a voracious reader since I was a kid. It’s rare to find me without a book. I’ve been known to hide out during family get togethers so I can read, and 99 percent of the time, I stay up much later than I should because I’m reading.

IBP – How long have you been blogging?

Kelly – Roughly since 2010. I had a blog prior to 2010, but didn’t do much with it, and I’ve been blogging under The Bookscape Report since late 2010.

IBP – What made you decide to start book blogging?

Kelly – I really wanted to connect with other readers who love YA literature as much as I do. Out of everyone I know who reads, most of them don’t read much, if any, YA literature. Now, it’s a bonus, since blogging and keeping up with other book blogs helps me in my job.

IBP – What genre(s) does your blog focus on?

Kelly – My intent is to focus on pretty much any genre, as long as it’s YA. I prefer contemporary fiction over anything else, but I’m not picky. I’ll review any genre.

IBP – Has your reading tastes changed since you started your blog?

Kelly – Yes, definitely. I read much more paranormal and sci-fi/fantasy than I used to, though I still prefer low-fantasy to high-fantasy.

IBP – Do you post reviews on your blog?

Kelly – Yes–my blog focuses primarily on reviews. I post the same reviews on other sites, such as Goodreads, Barnes and Noble, and Amazon when authors request it.

IBP – How many review requests do you get each month on average?

Kelly – It varies. I would say on average, maybe 5, but sometimes it’s more, and sometimes it’s less. I also receive books from two publishing companies usually a couple of times a month, since I’m on their reviewer lists.

IBP – Do you have a Review Policy or something similar?

Kelly – I do. I’ve found it necessary to have one, especially as I get more and more review requests. You can find my review policy here: http://thebookscapereport.blogspot.com/p/review-policy.html. It includes the types of materials I will review (young adult, genres, self-published, formats, etc.), as well as where I post reviews, what I include in my reviews, and other general guidelines

IBP -  Do you review Indie or Small Pub books?

Kelly – Yes. For a while, I contemplated not accepting self-published titles, but I found that despite my review policy stating I would not accept them for review, I was accepting them, anyway. In addition, one trend that I and other people in the library world have noticed is that self-published books are, in a way, becoming “the next big thing.” There are many self-published authors who are so successful, and I’m finding that it is too difficult to not accept self-published authors for review because self-publishing is becoming more and more acceptable, and more and more successful.

IBP -  Do you host guest posts or interviews?

Kelly – Yes! I love hosting guest posts and interviews. I do ask authors to allow me to read their book(s) before I send them interview questions, though.

IBP -  What information do you require when an author approaches you?

Kelly – Per my review policy, the information I require is: title of the book the author would like me to review, the name of the author (this is so important! I’ve received many review requests where the author’s name is not included!), the book’s release date, and whether or not the book is part of a series, and if it is, which number in the series it is. Other information I like to see in review requests: address me by name! I tend to disregard generic review requests that are sent to multiple bloggers. Also, showing me that you’ve spent some time looking at my blog goes a long way. I recently had an author send me a review request, and he congratulated me on having some of my poetry and photography published. While I will accept review requests that don’t mention that type of thing, I’m definitely more likely to accept a request when the author shows me that he/she has done more than just gotten my email address and sent me a review request. I’ve received a lot of review requests that aren’t for young adult titles, which I also disregard, since it shows that the author isn’t aware of what my blog focuses on.

It also helps for authors to include a blurb for the book they want me to review, but I don’t require it.
